This appears to be one of the meadowhawks (). Meadowhawks are really tough to ID. You might want to try bugguide.net at http://bugguide.net/node/view/522/bgimag... and paging through that section of the their website. One distinguishing characteristic of your sighting is that the face is entirely red. Many meadowhawks have white faces. There is, for instance, the cherry-faced meadowhawk which resembles your spotting, but I don't know if this is your subject.
