Blue Mormon

Papilio polymnestor

Description:

The Blue Mormon (Papilio polymnestor) is a large swallowtail butterfly found in South India and Sri Lanka. I think this must be a female as the blue around the spots was so pale, it was almost non-existant. The males show the blue much brighter.

Habitat:

seen in my garden in Tamil Nadu, Southern India

Yes, I noticed that. I just read in Wikipedia that females sometimes have 2 red streaks on the base of the forewing, upperside as does the one i spotted today. Wonder if that is another female... It has the red spot underneath as well.
