Common Tern; Charrán Común

Sterna hirundo

Description:

Nesting, but the lack of rain is evident in the almost total lack of vegetation. Also numbers of birds are much lower than in previous years. As I am 4 months behind with postings I can confirm that this years breeding season was a total disaster. To date there has been negligible rain for over a year, water levels are down to around 25% on average, these marshes are perhaps 95% dry and summer temperatures have been in the mid 40s C (111ºF). By mid June when there should have been scores of chicks these islands were dry and almost deserted.

Habitat:

Coastal marshes.
