Distinctive pattern.
Black face with white border curved from eyes to under the chin. Also a white stripe over forehead. Crown is a rusty color with top knot that curves forward. Slate gray chest and back with a rusty colory over a brown and white patterned belly. Wings are brown and white patterned. Tail and bill are short. Has many distinctive calls.
Mostly found in chaparral, sagebrush, oak woodlands. These were found near downed large branches of an Oak tree.
