Almost any body of water from road side ditches and small ponds to streams, rivers and reservoirs.
This species is very much a bird that has adapted to living in an urban environment. It is not unusual to see mother ducks and their ducklings nesting near homes and public buildings. These birds were sighted at Miller Park, Bloomington, Illinois which is in the heart of a large residential section of the community.
