Black Necked Stilt

Himantopus mexicanus

Description:

Extraordinary tall and slender; unique black and white plumage and long red legs (from The Sibley Guide to Birds, David Allen Sibley)

Habitat:

I found a large number of these birds in the Southeast water recharge ponds at Chandler Veteran's Desert Oasis Park. This is the first time I have seen Black Necked Stilts in this location. I have also observed them along the Gila River across the road from Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona.

Notes:

These pictures were taken around 12:30 PM on 6 February 2012.
