Common Waxbill; Pico de Coral

Estrilda astrild

Description:

Common Waxbill is also known as the St Helena Waxbill. An African species, these are thought to have originated from escaped cage birds or come in by ship. Whatever the reason they have spread rapidly throughout Portugal and are now spreading into Spain. This was just a small group but the following day we saw two huge flocks further inland, perhaps as many as 100 birds in all.

Habitat:

Waste ground
