The sword-tail newt

Cynops ensicauda popei

Description:

This subtropical newt only occurs at the Riu Kiu islands in Japan where it is endangered. There are 2 subspecies , the C. e. popei can be quickly recognized by the green coloration on it's back which the nominate species does not have. This colorfull newt is kept and bred in captivity in large numbers each year again. They live rather long , specimens of over 40 years of age are known.
