Swamp Wallaby

Wallabia bicolor

Description:

a medium sized wallaby with a grey back with rufous orange chest and pale cheeks.

Habitat:

Spotted in a Melaleuca thicket near coastal swamps.

Notes:

The wallabies in this area are very well camouflaged - blending with the melaleuca wood and dappled light.
This is the only living wallaby of the genus Wallabia. It is solitary animal but we found three in the same area. They feed on a variety of plants including some plants that are toxic to other animals.
They are quite endearing in the wild - they sit still in the grass with the tops of their dark heads just in sight.
Has several other common names including black wallaby and black pademelon. Family: Macropodidae
