Gulf Fritillary

Agraulis vanillae

Description:

Dorsal side solid orange with brown to black spots and edges of wings. Light orange spots on edge of hindwing. Ventral side has distinctive pattern of light yellow, orange, tan, and white (rather like a stain glass pattern)

Habitat:

Coastal uplands at Emerson Point Preserve in Manatee County FL. Along the fringe of the roadside.

Notes:

Spotted at Emerson Point Preserve during a prescribed fire. The butterfly was fearless and flew all around the edges of the flame, dipping down to catch nectar from some beggarsticks flowers.
