Agraulis vanillae
Pictured above are a Gulf Fritillary Butterfly, orange medium size with white wing spots (first 2 photos). As well, in the same area we found a Gulf Fritillary egg (third photo) and caterpillar (last 2 photos).
This butterfly was spotted in the Sonoran Desert garden area southeast of Tucson, AZ. The garden contains vines upon which the butterfly, caterpillar, and egg were found.
it was a unique experience to find not only the butterfly, but in the same area the gulf fritillary caterpillar and eggs. It has been of late a dry period in southeastern Arizona, and accordingly we have not spotted as many butterflies as in past years. Finding this 'family' all at the same time was interesting.
