merlin falcon

Falco columbarius

Habitat:

Prairies and open areas

Notes:

Merlins are a small-sized falcon, about the size of a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Adult males are slate-blue above, females and immatures brown. Their prey consists primarily of birds. Bear Creek Park has been a very reliable location in recent years to find Merlins. Often several Merlins may be found there at one time.
