Northern shoveler duck (male)

Anas clypeata

Habitat:

Marshy ponds and lakes

Notes:

The Northern Shoveler is aptly named, with its impressively long spatulate bill. The bill is longer than the head. It often swims with its neck extended and bill partially submerged, pushing the bill through the water for food. Both males and females have a blue wing patch which is prominent in flight. Northern Shovelers are one of the most common ducks on the Katy Prairie.
