Killdeer

Charadrius vociferus

Habitat:

Fields and shorelines.

Notes:

Our most familiar plover, Killdeers may be found almost anywhere. They are common in parking lots where commuters in the evening are often greeted by their plaintive kil-dee call. They prefer to build their nests on gravel. Rural drives are common sites. Killdeers are famous for their ability to feign a wing injury in order to lure predators away from a nest.
