Thanks for the suggestions. I think the Vine Sphinx is closest to what it is. This one did "flutter" it's wings quickly if you messed with it.... but it really didnt move.... even when my son "poked it". I suspect it may be toward the end of it's cycle... but it is beautiful.
this one was slow and looked like he/she was getting ready to die... maybe already laid eggs? would not think it was a young male... how do you tell the difference?

yes. seen today on a screen of window. the house is beside the lake.
