SG in CR

Update-this orchid has grown a lot over the last 3 years and mature plants will have upwards of 60 flowers per inflorescence. They are pollinated by a small brownish-bronzy colored bee, not the typical metallic green ones that pollinate many of the orchids here.

Yeah, I'd say worn out. I get these too if I leave the porch light on and I think they just keep flying with their wings against the wall and it rubs the scales of the wings.

Gilma, if you have only a single passion fruit plant it will rarely if ever produce fruit. It needs a second plant nearby for cross pollination. I had the same problem till I planted a few seeds in new spot and now they produce a fair amount of fruit. Though I've heard some people need to hand pollinate the flowers anyways due to lack of pollinating bees.

thaptor, thanks for the suggestion. But I can't find any species that has a coloration that is similar in the genus Acalymma.

Here in Northern Costa Rica they have been passing through for a couple weeks already. They seem to be migrating north. This year there are quite a few. Most years they are pretty rare here. Hard to get a picture though as they never seem to stop.

Great images! I find it's often pretty challenging to get a shot of the topside of the wings on butterflies that have colorful patterns. The butterflies tend to keep them hidden as soon as they thing anybody is around to see them.

Thanks for selecting my spotting! I still need to go through my pictures from that trip. There should be some hummingbird images that still need to be ID'd.
