I forgot to mention that he was about the same size as a ring-billed gull, so I don't think he's a great black-backed gull.

Wow, thanks--yes, it does look like that! I suspected some sort of fungus, but the slime trails make it confusing. How did you find that other similar listing?

The leaves look like Rhododendron, though I can't see the flower bud well enough to see if it is consistent with that plant.
