The green around the eyes comes only in mating season. The rest of the year it is yellow.
Fantastic spotting and photos!
Thank you Xiaoxuan. Now I know why it looked a little familiar - I had one in an aquarium many years ago. But they don't appear to be native to Florida. So I wonder how it got here and if it is a non-native fish that someone let loose in the local waterways. I never noticed a fish like it in my backyard canal whose water is clear enough to see many fish varieties.
I love the breeding colors. I posted a picture of one in my backyard that had grown a bright red wattle or gular sac under his chin, also a breeding season phenomenon but only lasting a very brief time.
I have seen these in Green Cay and just posted a photo of one.
Interesting bird. While I have seen the purple gallinules (just posted one) and common gallinules, I have never seen this variety.
Thanks Ashley and kdpicturemaker. This green heron was so intent on catching dinner that he stayed very still which made taking his picture a lot easier!
Great shots! I'm guessing Green Cay or Wakodahatchee wetlands. Both are terrific and photogenic spots to see south Florida birds.
