California scrub jay

Aphelocoma californica

Description:

The California scrub jay has a blue head, wings, and tail, a gray-brown back, grayish underparts, and white eyebrows. The throat is whitish with a blue necklace.

Habitat:

Spotted at the edge of a large wetland that has dense vegetation. Known locally as Edmonds marsh.

Notes:

The intelligence of these birds is off the charts rivaling chimpanzees. Studies have shown they can remember over 200 food caches. Other research has shown they have funerals for dead jays in which they screech over the dead body summoning others. This can last up to a half hour.
