Description:

red headed woodpecker that creates sap-hole lines in trees. They drink the sap and catch insects attracted to the sweetness

Habitat:

when we moved here there were populations of yellow bellied and red breasted. Now I only see red breasted The last two photos are fun because the head is blurred whilethe body and tree are in focus

For some reason this one was too absorbed in eating. The first time I moved, he ducked behind the tree, but after that he didn't seem to care where I went

Every time I see these I feel overwhelmed by the red on their head. They are too wild and shy. Almost impossible to catch them.

Thanks! This cedar tree is in my yard with a hill behind it. I took some pictures from the base and others from up the hill. I was fortunate that the little guy didn't evade me too much and kept coming back to his fresh holes to get the sap.
