Dryocopus pileatus
open deciduous, mixed and coniferous woodlands and forest edges, fields and meadows; swamps in winter
Our Pileated Woodpeckers all love to eat from the dead or dying trees we've kept in our yard garnering bugs, larva and spiders from the rotting wood. We've found they're also fond of: beef suet, shelled unsalted peanuts and orange halves.

Marta-Yes, my problem exactly on most occasions. I asked my chainsaw-happy father to leave three dead/dying trees standing at a safe 6-7' (in case or for when they do fall/collapse) to serve as food for our woodpeckers but also to serve as platform and hanging feeder stations. This tree in particular looks visually terrible however the birds, insects and other wildlife LOVE it and its made for a perfect place for me to get ground-level images of them at work. :-)
So nice that he was at floor level. Here I always find them far away up in the trees :-)
