American Kestrel

Description:

The American Kestrel, also know as the Sparrow Hawk, is a small falcon, and the only kestrel found in the Americas. It is the most common falcon in North America, and is found in a wide variety of habitats. It is the smallest raptor in North America and is sexually dimorphic. This is a male!

Open field with tree cover near by.

Kestrels are actually a small specie of falcon! As far as identification, the size is a dead give away - these guys are tiny! Hawks are generally much bigger (especially in my area of Colorado) and most other falcons, such as prairie falcons are much bigger. The coloring of males kestrels is also very distinct. Slate blue wings and head with rusty red markings as well! Great question, I hope that helps a little! :)
