Northern Water Snake

Nerodia sipedon

Description:

Reddish brown or gray to brownish-black, with dark crossbands on neck region, and alternating dark blotches on the back and sides of midbody

Habitat:

They are found in almost every aquatic setting from the East Coast through the Midwest of the United States.

Notes:

I followed this snake for some time around a small cove trying to get a good picture of it. I had to sit and wait for a few minutes for it to stop hiding in algae and plant matter. Finally he poked his head through the algae and then went on his way giving me the perfect opportunity to get a couple pictures
