Black-belly swamp snake

Hemiaspis signata

Description:

Black or dark brown with smooth, shiny scales. Possesses distinctive white/pale lines on each side of the head.

Habitat:

Moist areas such as creeks, wet forests and well-watered gardens. Typically found along the east coast of Queensland and New South Wales.

Notes:

Venomous, but 'non-dangerous'. Bites result in pain and local swelling. Females can bear up to 20 live young. Feeds primarily on frogs, skinks and other lizards.
