Ornate Butterflyfish (kikakapu)

Chaetodon ornatissimus

Description:

Cream coloured fish with yellow/orange bands running diagonally across their body, which is mostly rimmed in black. Grow to 8 inches long.

Habitat:

Feeds on a wide range of coral (10) in the Hawaiian islands and shows little preference between them. They feed by scraping the coral removing many polyps in each pass. They also feed on coral mucus. Even though they do not seem to harm the reef. Central and Western Pacific with some records for Indian ocean.

Notes:

Because of their diet, these gorgeous fish are unsuitable for aquariums, thankfully! They form strong pair bonds.
