Cardinalis cardinalis
Males are bright red with a crest and black face (to the left of picture); females and young have less pronounced colors
Throughout the East; in woodland edges, seams, thickets and gardens. Areas with shrubs and small trees, including forest edges, hedgerows and suburbs.
For the 3rd year this family has nested. I have seen the male teach the young's how to feed from bird feeder and squirrels feeders. Even fought a squirrel; I regret the camera was not handy!
