Northern Green Frog

Rana clamitans melanota

Description:

Several of these sitting along the edge of the big pond today. Finally managed to get close enough for a decent photo without spooking one. Contrary to the name of this species, they are not always green! Colors and spot patterns can vary.

Notes:

This species can be distinguished from the American bull frog by the ridges that start behind the tympanic membranes and run along their sides. The bull frog lacks these ridges.
