Orange-patched Smoky Moth

Pyromorpha dimidiata

Description:

Day-flying moth. Wings black, translucent, basal half of forewing orange. Note that inner margin of forewing is black, orange in rather similar Lycomorpha. Also note phenology: Pyromorpha flies in early summer, Lycomorpha in late summer, fall. Wingspan 18-28 mm.

Habitat:

This one was observed along the Modoc Trail in the Sumter National Forest near Modoc (McCormick County), SC.

Notes:

This spotting is a BAMONA record for the species in McCormick County, SC.
