Javan Pond Heron - non-breeding

Ardeola speciosa

Description:

Striped breast, brown back, white breast, yellow legs, yellow eye, black tip beak with orange on lower mandible, looking very like the non-breeding plumage of the Chinese Pond Heron, which are also in the area.

Habitat:

Resident in Cambodia and we saw many this day while boating through the flooded forest on the way to Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary at the head of Tonle Sap or the Great Lake, near Siem Reap. Likes mangroves, ponds, wetlands, lowlands along coast.

Notes:

Photo 1 is where he is getting too nervous to stay so close to us and is getting ready to fly. Photo 2 is when he first saw us.
