Mottled Duck

Anas fulvigula

Description:

Male Florida Mottled Duck - the beak of the male is predominantly yellow unlike the female's which is more mottled in color. Their bright orange feet and legs are distinctive. They seem to stick with the same mate - his mate is shown in front in the second photo.

Habitat:

Inland fresh water canal by an abandoned golf course in Boca Raton, FL

Notes:

Both male and female guard their territory from other pairs or single mottled ducks with a lot of feather pulling, quacking, chasing with their heads lowered and generally a lot of drama. It is interesting to watch them eat - it seems that the male guards the female and watches her eat. He occasionally eats himself but seems intent on keeping other ducks away and watching for trouble from predators.
