Candle-snuff fungus

Xylaria hypoxylon

Description:

Clumps of flattened branched black outgrowths from rotting wood. The surface of these fungal growths were "furry" with the tips of the branches paler containing the asexual conidia. As the fungus matures it thickens, becomes black and contains the ascospores making sexual reproduction possible.

Habitat:

Spotted growing on a damp rotting log.

Notes:

On this log were several other types of fungus - gilled and brackets with pores.
