Red-banded hairstreak

Calycopis cecrops

Description:

A somewhat small grey butterfly with red and white zig-zag lines across the underside of its wings. It has a "false head", which are the blue spots and tails on the hind wings. These help it avoid predators. Its size ranges from 0.9–1.25 inches (23–32 mm).

Habitat:

Spotted on wildflowers in a large powerline meadow (see pic 4) that is bordered by mixed forest.
