Hylatomus pileatus
I heard this woodpecker's loud call before I spotted it. The pileated woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America. Probes and excavates in dead wood in search of insects. They make unique rectangular holes in trees. The nest holes these birds make offer crucial shelter to many species including swifts, owls, ducks, bats, and pine martens.
Pileated Woodpeckers are forest birds and require large, standing dead trees and downed wood. Forests can be evergreen, deciduous, or mixed and are often old.and, in the East. they live in young forests as well and may even be seen in partially wooded suburbs and backyards. This pileated woodpecker was spotted in the forest surrounding the Crooked River State Park in St Marys Georgia
