Lamprima aurata
A stag beetle has large mandibles in the male. This genus is highly polished. The female, as this is has mandibles but very reduced. All photographs are of the same individual but different lighting. A closely related species can be seen here to illustrate the mandibles of the male http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/115...
Found on a footpath. A few years ago I have found several of them hibernating in a rotting stump, together with their larvae and pupae.
This last image was taken by me using 12 images at various focal length and stacking (merging) them in photoshop. It needs better light and more layers. It has a blur on the back that I cannot explain. The following link shows a much better attempt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:F...

Your experimental photo is very very nice! And clear.
Thank you AlmasTalat
I've added an experimental photo of 12 images merged in photo-shop to improve the focal range through the entire insect.

Thank you kd.
I see tbese two or theree times each year but usually not on plants, as most beetles are; these are often found on concrete footpaths, parking lots or around buildings. I saw a group of them one winter hibernating in a rotten stump.
Martinl, those colours are so beautiful! do you find many of this type in that area?
Spectacular find, Martin!
