Sarcoscypha sp.
Bright red cup fungi that were 3-5 mm diameter. The inner surfaces were red, smooth, and wrinkled. The outer surfaces were pink/peach and slightly hairy. They did not have stems.
Growing on a stick on a muddy riverbank. Mixed forest with lots of oak, maple, birch, and hemlock.
I think these are either Sarcoscypha austriaca or Sarcoscypha dudleyi, but a species ID can't be determined without microscopy.
@Jamie Grant - thanks, but Sarcoscypha dudleyi and Sarcoscypha austriaca, which are the eastern North American species of scarlet elfcup, can't be distinguished between without microscopy. That's why I've left the ID as Sarcoscypha sp.
