Teardrop Butterflyfish - lauhau

Chaetodon unimaculatus

Description:

Yellow/white body with a large black teardrop shape on the side, black stripe through the eye and along the back before the tail. Singly or in pairs, grows to about 8 inches long.

Habitat:

feeds mainly on rice corals and can bite off bits of the stony skeleton to get at the tissue inside. Indonesia to Hawaii. Individuals occupy large overlapping home ranges but do not defend a territory or have permanent partners.
