Neon Skimmer Dragonfly

Libellula croceipennis

Description:

This is a bright red male. The females are a dull orange. The skimmers or perchers and their relatives form the Libellulidae, the largest dragonfly family in the world.

Habitat:

Wildlife habitat garden with ponds and streams.

Notes:

This is probably one of three that have been fighting over the pond territory. This one has perched out front just after a rain. This made a close up photo much easier than when they are in the center of the pond.

They should be at a pond around you. They are aggressive and like to have an area to themselves. Skimmers like to perch, so look for them hanging on twigs and tall pond leaves.
