A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Didelphis virginiana
North America's only native marsupial, the Virginia Opossum is cat-sized with coarse grey fur, rat-like prehensile tails, and even opposable thumbs, they are found in almost all of both the east and west North American coasts.
They live in deciduous woodlands typically near wetlands and are commonly found near neighborhood garbage sites.
At Teatown we enjoy the company of our ambassador Virginia Opossums. Opossums only live for about three years so unfortunately we know a few. Our current possum educator is Annabelle, and Miss Annabelle is unable to be released due to head injuries.
