Description:

Picture shows above well, but below in also 2-toned: inner area purplish-brown and outer band tan.

Habitat:

Dry stream beds and canals, riversides, beaches, meadows, alpine rockslides, roads and trails. I found it on a subalpine trail, Blackwell Peak, Manning Park, BC.

Notes:

Host plants are nettles. Adults overwinter. Ranges from the far north, except Alaska, to southern California, Oklahoma and West Virginia. Extremely versatile, it inhabits every kind of place within its range, from cold desert to rain forest and city lot to alpine summit.
