Small pyramid leaf galls. There were numerous tiny insects associated with these galls when I cut some open. They contain little keratin and appeared to have very limited development.
Thanks for your comments. Lori, the camera is a toy digital microscope made by traveler and sold (sometimes) by Aldi. It is easily manipulated but has dreadful DOF. These are almost 1 mm in length.
