You can see it spitting out some wood chunks while it was excavating the cavity. Earlier that day, I found a European Starling (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/122...) sticking its head inside the cavity and spending a great deal of time around it. "As many as half of all Red-bellied Woodpecker nests in some areas get invaded by starlings."
