Sterna paradisaea
Arctic terns are medium sized marine birds. There is little difference between adult males and females. Both have grey wings, white body plumage and a black nape and crown. Their beaks are dark red. Like other terns they have characteristic 'pointy' wings with sharp wing tips and forked tails.
Arctic terns are the Olympic long distance champions of nature, undertaking a yearly migration from their Arctic breeding grounds to the Antarctic and back again, covering a 19,000 km journey.
This individual is showcasing the typical 'hover and dive' behaviour of terns, foraging for little fish that appear in the surface.
