Description:

Wings are light to dark brown above; teh forewings usually have 1 or 2 small to very large eyspots that are rimmed iwth yellow or set in a yellow patch adn often have a small white or large blue center. Below, the wings are paler, with striations; teh hindwings have 1, 2, or 6 eyespots.

Habitat:

Fly in meadows, wetlands, fields, and open woodlands and along watercourses during summer. Southern Canada and most of US; absent in S. California and most of SW.
