Robber Fly

Ommatius sp.

Description:

A small brown Robber Fly with red eyes, about 1 cm in length. He had a favorite stick to land on and kept flying away and returning when I tried to take his picture. Eventually he returned with a small beetle prey (2nd picture) and then stayed on his stick to eat it. He no longer cared about me and let me take pictures for about 15 minutes. It is striking the side view of the thorax, which looks like the construction of a rock wall. Family Asilidae.

Habitat:

Garden, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.

Notes:

Many thanks to Chris Cohen of East Carolina University for the identification. https://bugguide.net/node/view/409060 https://www.alamy.es/ladron-de-volar-omm... https://www.flickr.com/photos/7432824@N0... https://asiloidflies.si.edu/asilidae-ima...
