Candy-striped Leafhopper

Graphocephala coccinea

Description:

This brightly colored little garden pest sucks the nutrients out of plants as well as injecting a toxin into the plant the stops the flow of sap. The leafhopper will (inadvertently) spread disease from one plant to another this way. As an added bonus, the waste the leafhopper expels burns tiny holes in the leaves.

Habitat:

The Candy-striped leafhopper is a meadow and woodland dweller native to North and Central America. This one lives in a suburban backyard and is seen here on a wineberry bramble in a weedy section of the yard.

Notes:

I can't help but notice the head on my little guy is missing the blue seen on everyone else's pics.
