Snowberry Clearwing

Hemaris diffinis

Description:

Massive, clear winged moth with yellow and black banding on thorax, similar to bees.

Habitat:

lawn, flowering plants

Notes:

While not the most technically strong picture I have ever taken, this fellow did not sit still for very long. At first I thought he was a humming bird when he zipped into my yard, then an odd bee. But the long proboscis probing my "butterfly bush" convinced me otherwise. A look through my trusty Peterson Field Guide to Moths helped me with the ID.
