Large Robber Fly, covered in spines and white hair. Strong white beard. The abdomen has lateral bands of white. This is a male. About 2.5 cm long. It's tibiae are orange and black. It was settling down on a rock for the night and let me get quite close. Family Asilidae. This may be Efferia aestruans (http://www.cirrusimage.com/fly_robber_Ef...).
On a rock near the Virgin River at the entrance to Zion National Park (see last picture).
