Darkling Beetle

Eleodes sp.

Description:

Large black Darkling Beetle, 3 cm long, with strong elytral striations. It had a faint blue tinge at certain angles. The underside of the tarsi were orange. In the 4th picture, the beetle has assumed its defensive position for chemical emission with the tail lifted up in the air. Family Tenebrionidae.

Habitat:

On a trail within the Zion Lodge, Zion National Park, Utah.

Notes:

Twenty more large black Tenebs were observed along the trail edges when coming back down after dark from Angel's Landing. Now I am not sure how many were of the species with smooth elytra (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/179...) or of this species with striated elytra.
