Train Wrecker

Neolentinus lepidus

Description:

Caps 4-5 inches diameter; white with brown center; some cracking. Gills not attached to the stem. Stem tapering slightly from apex to base; scales. Stem bruised brown (pic #3) -. Spore print, white. No distinctive odor.

Habitat:

Mushrooms growing at the base of a conifer stump in a mixed pine/deciduous forest. Near lake shore.

Notes:

Called the "Train wrecker" because it loved to grow on RR ties and rot them out before they chemically treated them with creosol.
