Common Watersnake

Nerodia sipedon

Description:

Spotted this when I heard frogs singing in the creek behind my house, thought I would try to get a photo of one. I am guessing this little one was also looking for frogs, but with completely different motives. Unfortunately, it scurried off before I could get a better picture, apparently was uneasy with my presence. Which brings me to my final point, someone asked me if I killed it, "of course not!" was my reply.

Habitat:

Urban-creek

Thanks Lisa, It looked like it had a copperhead.

Nice spotting, but this is a Northern (or common watersnake). The bands are broader on the dorsum and narrow down the siders. On a copperhead the bands are narrow on the dorsum and widen down the sides often forming an hourglass pattern.
